2001 – Takagi Masakatsu
Breaking down musical barriers
Takagi Masakatsu is a Japanese video artist and musician who freely admits he couldn’t do any of his work without the Mac. In 2001, the Mac allowed him to seamlessly mix electronica with folk music from around the world. With two other musicians recording in different parts of the world, he could play as if they were all in the same room and let each song form organically. So original was the music that a new genre was born.

Takagi Masakatsu’s stunning work blends visual art, animation, and sound to make one-of-a-kind audiovisual compositions. By mastering visual and musical manipulation on the Mac, he was able to single-handedly create new expressions of digital art mixed with its own distinctive soundtrack. Masakatsu is a visual artist and musician whose work knows no aesthetic borders. He has presented video installations and performed concerts around the world. In addition to his original work, he also finds time to collaborate with musicians, dancers, scientists, filmmakers, and commercial directors.

PowerBook G4
The titanium PowerBook G4 was a big departure from the previous black curvilinear models. It was the world’s first widescreen notebook. And it shipped with Mac OS X, a complete reengineering of the operating system that introduced the Aqua user interface and the Dock. The year 2001 also brought iTunes, which would go on to revolutionize the music industry.

What people did with it
In 2001, the PowerBook G4 was many things to Mac users. Here’s how people say they used it the most.
