1997 – Louis Rossetto and Jane Metcalfe
Chronicling the digital age
Touted as the “Rolling Stone of technology,” Wired magazine made an immediate impact when it hit newsstands. From the very beginning, partners Louis Rossetto and Jane Metcalfe produced their magazine exclusively with the Mac. They felt that it gave them the tools to manage their content and helped them create a distinctive look for the publication. Wired would go on to become the unofficial magazine of all things digital, and to this day every issue lists the Apple hardware used to make it.

Wired cofounder Jane Metcalfe works against a deadline to get out the first issue of Wired magazine in January 1993. That issue was produced on a Mac, and every issue since has been made on the Mac. Wired is still available in print, but it also lives online and as an app. One of the original San Francisco start-ups, Wired began in a loft in the SoMa district. Its gritty, DIY nature was reflected throughout the office space, where its young team helped create the culture that would both influence and represent the web and social media.

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh
This Macintosh, celebrating Apple’s 20th birthday, wasn’t like other computers of the day. In fact, it wasn’t like any other Macintosh. It was personally delivered and set up by a white-glove concierge service. With its unique form and custom Bose sound system, it represented a futuristic vision of the desktop computer.

What people did with it
In 1997, the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh was many things to Mac users. Here’s how people say they used it the most.
