1994 – Hans Zimmer
Orchestrating music and technology
A composer who wasn’t classically trained or taught to read music, Hans Zimmer has used the power and simplicity of the Mac to express the sounds he hears in his head. In 1994, the Macintosh was critical to composing the score for The Lion King. Zimmer wasn’t able to attend the recording sessions in South Africa, but the Mac allowed him to take disparate pieces performed far away and meld them into an award-winning soundtrack.

“It occurred to me very early on that all musical instruments are really technology, and the computer would be a perfect thing to add to the repertoire of the orchestra,” says Zimmer. That realization would be the key to his incredible career path, taking a kid from the outskirts of Frankfurt to the biggest studios in Hollywood.
Most computers were relatively slow and inelegant when Zimmer began programming music, so his introduction to the Mac was love at first sight. “For the first time, you could clearly see a sound waveform on the screen, and the resolution was really good. You could tell there was a vision behind it,” he says. From that moment on, Zimmer and the Mac were inseparable creative partners.

“I wouldn’t be a composer without the Mac.”

— Hans Zimmer

Zimmer’s production credits read like a Top 100 list of unforgettable films: 12 Years a Slave, Rush, Inception, Frost/Nixon, Black Hawk Down, The Thin Red Line, Driving Miss Daisy, and the list just goes on. Since The Lion King, he’s been nominated for numerous awards, and continues to create some of the biggest music in film.

PowerBook 540c
As the Macintosh turned 10 years old, it showed no signs of slowing down. The PowerBook 540c wasn’t just the first PowerBook with an LCD display and Ethernet — it introduced the revolutionary trackpad that’s still used in notebooks today.

What people did with it
In 1994, the PowerBook 540c was many things to Mac users. Here’s how people say they used it the most.
