1989 – John Knoll
Visualizing the impossible
John Knoll has spent his career creating visual effects for movies, but it was his co-invention of Photoshop, with his brother Thomas, that helped change design and photography forever. Before that, photos were manipulated by hand in the darkroom. Originally developed on the Mac, Photoshop gave photographers new, faster ways to manipulate images and allowed them to push creative boundaries. It’s become so embedded in culture that whenever someone alters a photo, the name of the application is used to describe what they did.

What began as a computer graphics hobby for John and Thomas Knoll became the most widely used image manipulation software in the world: Adobe Photoshop. Originally released exclusively for the Macintosh, it let photographers retouch and alter their photos without having to purchase high-end equipment or hire an expensive professional. As chief creative officer of Industrial Light & Magic, John Knoll used his Macintosh “rebel unit” team to create special effects for dozens of popular films. In the 1990s he brought Photoshop to his movie effects, allowing him to composite all his shots digitally and add an unprecedented level of realism.

Macintosh Portable
The Macintosh Portable was Apple’s first battery-powered computer. Weighing almost 16 pounds, it wasn’t nearly as portable as today’s notebooks. But that didn’t stop it from being the first off-the-shelf notebook to be taken into space, aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in 1991. Among other things, it was used to send the very first email from space.

What people did with it
In 1989, the Macintosh Portable was many things to Mac users. Here’s how people say they used it the most.
